Robert Parker's Wine Advocate

The old-vine white 2021 Vinhas Velhas Branco was produced with the fruit from some 15 small plots of old vines aged between 60 and 130 years of age and planted with a myriad of old varieties—Síria, Bical, Fernão Pires, Encruzado, Arinto, Cerceal and Malvasia Fina—on slopes with granite soils. It's inspired by the natural vinification of some Burgundy wines. It fermented with indigenous yeasts and matured in 500-liter barrels for 12 months and a further 10 months in stainless steel. It has moderate ripeness and alcohol (12%) with a pH of 3.33 and 5.29 grams of acidity. It has an incredible nose that is nuanced, complex, elegant and changing, with notes of herbs, wild flowers and earth. It has a very tasty and saline palate that is subtle with great purity of flavors, clean and precise. It reminds me of some whites from Ganevat. 7,900 bottles produced. As always, it was bottled with full malolactic, unfiltered and unfined. It was bottled in April 2023.

Features

Description

Antonio Madeira Vinhas Velhas Branco is a white wine that comes from the Dão region, specifically from the foothills of the Serra da Estrela. This white wine is the result of the passion and dedication of Antonio, who has cultivated very old vines in this region. About 25% of the white varieties used in this blend are around 20 ancient grape varieties, some of them even in danger of extinction, such as Marufo, Bastardo or Alfrocheiro. These vines, which are between 50 and 130 years old, stand out for the authenticity of their varieties and for the characteristics and nuances of their granitic soils, where their roots are deeply immersed.

Winemaking

The different plots are fermented and aged separately. Fermentation is carried out with indigenous yeasts in open vats, seeking a light extraction and the maximum expression of the terroir. Subsequently, malolactic fermentation takes place in used French oak barrels. The wine is aged for 18 months in the same French oak barrel s of different volumes, followed by a further three months in stainless steel tanks.

Taste

It is a deep wine, with a lot of character, and presents notes of pure fruit such as pears, peaches, citrus and orange. Floral notes, fennel, ginger, gunpowder and wet granite are also perceptible. On the palate, it is fresh, taut, crystalline, elegant and full-bodied, with a saline touch that invites you to take another sip.
