Shafer One Point Five 2021

Robert Parker's Wine Advocate
An excellent wine, still arguably a decent value in the context of Napa Valley Cab, Shafer's 2021 Cabernet Sauvignon One Point Five features attractive aromas of ripe cherries, cedar and vanilla, plus hints of mocha and loam. Full-bodied, ripe and velvety, it offers more concentration, tannins and length than the winery's TD-9. The question consumers will have to answer is whether it is worth the step up in price.

Description
Shafer One Point Five has a unique history dating back to January 1983, when Doug Shafer first joined the family winery as winemaker. Despite his background in viticulture and experience at other Napa Valley wineries and vineyards, he wondered why he took on the challenge. Doug and John Shafer began working together in 1983, and although the future of the winery was uncertain, together they learned the business. They coined the term "one and a half generations" to differentiate their story from a typical second generation story. Hence the name One Point Five.
Shafer Winery has produced two Cabernet Sauvignon wines since the early 1980s. Hillside Select comes from the hillside vines surrounding the winery, while their Stags Leap District Cabernet was sourced from the Shafer property and nearby growers. In 1996, Doug purchased Cabernet from as far north as Calistoga and as far south as Oak Knoll, producing Shafer's first non-Stags Leap District Cabernet. However, in 2007, they introduced One Point Five Cabernet Sauvignon, which offers classic Stags Leap District aromas and flavours, along with easy-to-love tannins.
Winemaking
In terms of the wine's varietal composition, Shafer One Point Five is composed of 94% Cabernet Sauvignon, 3% Petit Verdot, 2% Merlot and 1% Malbec.
Ageing lasts 20 months in brand new French oak barrels, specifically from the Allier and Tronçais regions. This process of ageing in oak barrels not only imparts flavour and aroma characteristics to the wine, but also contributes to its structure and longevity.
Taste
Shafer One Point Five is distinguished by its intense aromas and flavours of black cherry, crème de cassis, freshly picked black plum, lavender and aromatic herbs. This classic Cabernet Sauvignon shows equal measures of richness and balance. In addition, the wine's perfectly integrated tannins offer a structure that promises decades of beauty to come, according to Shafer winemaker Elias Fernandez.
