I love the rosé 2012 Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva, perhaps the finest vintage (together with the 2010) of the modern releases produced again since 2008. It's a textbook example of this unusual rosé a blend of 60% Garnacho (they use the masculine form of the name of the grape), 30% Tempranillo and 10% Viura that matured in American oak barrels for four years, during which time the wine acquired an orange color and a nutty nose with notes of candied orange peel, mushroom and forest floor. It's only 12.5% alcohol and has a pH of 3.3. 15,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in April 2018.

Description
Viña Tondonia Rosado Gran Reserva is a rosé wine made with Garnacha, Tempranillo and a small percentage of Viura. This wine has been created by the Bodega López de Heredia Viña Tondonia in the D.O.Ca. La Rioja.
These grape varieties come from Viña Gravonia, Viña Tondonia, Viña Cubillas and Viña Bosconia, all of which are their own vineyards located in the Rioja town of Haro, capital of La Rioja Alta.
The vineyards are planted on soils ranging from alluvial to clay-limestone, with the presence of gravel and pebbles and a microclimate with an Atlantic influence.
Winemaking
The grapes are harvested by hand, bunch by bunch. Once in the winery, the must ferments in large oak vats of 60 hectolitres. The ageing process lasts 4 years in oak barrels, with 2 rackings per year. The wine is then clarified with fresh egg whites and bottled unfiltered.
Taste
Viña Tondonia Gran Reserva Rosé is a wine of great complexity and volume with floral and spicy notes. In the mouth it is fresh and smooth, but full-bodied due to its ageing in oak barrels.
