The bottled 2022 La Faraona, from the 0.5 hectares of 82-year-old vines at 800 to 860 meters above sea level they own in the 'paraje' of El Fierro in Corullón, is a lot less explosive and showy than the barrel sample I tasted almost 12 months ago. In fact, the wine feels more backward, closed and austere than any of the 2022s. It has more of everything; it's very spicy and peppery, with plenty of tannins and grip. This is going to require more time in bottle. It shows some notes of sweet spices that should integrate with a little more time. Patience... It matured in foudre for eight months. 2,050 bottles, 82 magnums, 16 double magnums and seven Jeroboams produced. It was bottled in November 2023.

Description
La Faraona is a red wine produced in the D.O. Bierzo by the Descendientes de J. Palacios winery in Villafranca del Bierzo, León.
This is a wine made from selected grapes of the Mencía variety, which come from a single plot planted more than 70 years ago, with a steep slope in the area known as El Ferrol, in the highest part of Corullón.
Winemaking
The grapes were harvested by hand. The grapes are partially destemmed. Alcoholic fermentation is carried out in a small open oak vat with indigenous yeasts and "bazuqueos".
After maceration, which lasted 36 days, malolactic fermentation took place in wooden vats. The wine was aged for 9 months and a half in French oak barrels and bottled unclarified and unfiltered.
Taste
La Faraona is a red wine with an expressive, elegant and complex aroma. In the mouth it is tasty, easy to drink, with good acidity, spicy, balsamic, long and very mineral.

La Faraona is a majestic wine prepared in a very artisanal way. It is a reverence to nature where the grape is respected at all times. In the words of its creators, it is a profound wine, full of mystery, and the experience of smelling and tasting it is almost mystical.
